Robbinsdale Area Schools (Rdale) is set to bring the excitement of GaGa Ball to every school in the district, thanks to a $210,000 grant awarded by Hennepin County. The funding will cover the cost of installing GaGa Ball pits at all district sites, ensuring equitable access to the popular game for students of all ages and abilities.
GaGa Ball, often described as a more inclusive and fast-paced version of dodgeball, is played in an octagonal pit with 30-inch-high walls. Players use a soft ball and aim to hit opponents below the knees to eliminate them, creating a dynamic and engaging experience. The game is beloved by students from elementary to high school, offering opportunities for physical activity, teamwork, and social interaction.
“GaGa Ball has a universal appeal. It’s a simple game that brings students together in play, encouraging inclusivity and fostering a sense of community,” said Alissa Pier, Director of Architecture and Planning for Rdale.
The district’s Facilities and Operations Department will oversee the installation process, with work set to begin this spring. Each pit will be placed in a location that ensures easy, inclusive, and equitable access for students, making it simple for everyone to join in the fun.
Each pit will feature:
- Cedar or synthetic planks for wall boards (treated lumber is not permitted)
- A top rail for safety and comfort
- An ADA-compliant door or gate
- Clear signage with the rules of the game
- ADA-compliant pathways to ensure accessibility for students with disabilities
“This project reflects our commitment to equity and inclusion. By providing GaGa Ball pits at every site, we’re removing barriers to play and ensuring that all students, regardless of ability or socioeconomic background, have access to this activity,” Pier added.
Beyond the school day, the pits will also be available to the wider community, reinforcing the district’s role as a hub for neighborhood engagement. With a focus on inclusivity, the pits will normalize shared play experiences among students of all abilities, fostering understanding and empathy.
